It’s the week of Thanksgiving and if you haven’t already gotten your turkey, you may be in for a challenge. The issue is not a lack of turkeys, the issue is turkeys are not as easy to get at the grocery store right now as they have been in years past. Simply because of supply chain congestion and labor shortages. Now, it will be a bit of a challenge to not just find a turkey in your price range, but a turkey that tastes good as well.
Trucking and Rail Update
- Port of Virginia received approval on a $61.5 million dollar construction bid for on-dock rail expansion, which hopes to increase the port’s on-dock rail capacity to 1.1 million containers a year. According to Freightwaves, this project includes the expanding of double-stack, on-dock rail operations at the Norfolk port by doubling the size of the Central Rail Yard at the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT).
- British Columbia, Canada, and the U.S. Northwest are bracing for more storms this Thanksgiving week. These areas will produce heavy mountain snow (around 12-36 inches) and several inches of valley rain, as well as very strong winds (hitting up to 50 MPH). According to Freightwaves, the first storm will begin Monday afternoon, lasting through Tuesday. After that the next storm will arrive late on Wednesday or early on Thanksgiving, with the potential to last into the weekend.
- Major lanes of concern:
- Interstate 5 from Seattle to Medford
- Interstate 84 in Oregon from La Grande to Meacham
- Interstate 90 from Seattle to Missoula, Montana

- CSX is opening a North Carolina intermodal terminal which will help improve port and highway congestion and serve the regional market surrounding Raleigh, North Carolina. According to Freightwaves, the terminal has three wide-span, zero-emission electric cranes with a lift capacity of 110,000 containers per year.
