What effect will Canada’s ELD Mandate have?
Freightwaves reports that this past Saturday, Canada’s mandate for electronic logging devices (ELD’s) went into effect.
How does this change US trucking into Canada?
As of now, none of these new rules in the mandate will effect US drivers going into Canada. Meaning that US drivers will not be stopped for inspection of their ELD’s.
The difference between the US and Canada is that as of now, the US has the manufactures of these devices certify that they are safe to use. The new mandate in Canada states that the government must approve the use of each type of ELD, not the manufacturer.
When is this fully going into place?
Due to this being a ‘soft-rollout’ of the mandate, it is unclear exactly what this plan will look like. Until June 2022, it looks like there will be no penalties, but after June 2022, penalties will begin if a companies ELD’s are not in order.
It is unclear at that time if this mandate will extend to US drivers entering Canada.
