Domestic Freight Trends: Post-Thanksgiving Rebound and December Slowdown

When it comes to domestic freight, not surprising, tender volumes rebounded after the Thanksgiving holiday, though they are still lower compared to last year. The month of December is typically the slowest month due to mid-month holidays. As we get closer to the holidays, according to Freightwaves, a notable increase in volumes before the year ends is rather unlikely.

Freightwaves SONAR data shows that Midhaul volumes, or loads traveling between 250 and 400 miles, have performed better than other volumes over the past two weeks, dropping by only 3.04%. Additionally, tender volumes from the Chicago market gained momentum, rising by 9.76%, marking the largest increase among the major U.S. freight markets. In the California region, we have seen some rates, coming in and out, beginning to tighten up.

The dry van market has continued to dip in these last two weeks and since the start of September. Per Freightwaves data, the Van Outbound Tender Volume Index is up 13% w/w due to the holiday but is down 5.92% in that two-week period.

On the reefer side, some reports indicate that capacity is “tightening.” According to Freightwaves ROTRI (refrigerated tender rejection rates), the average has been above 14% since October, compared to around 8% during the same period last year. However, as they pointed out, we saw a similar trend last year, with rejection rates rising during this time but returning to lower levels in February and March as the market stabilized. Cold weather does impact reefer market dynamics, and if this winter turns out to be particularly cold, demand for reefer capacity is expected to remain elevated.

In late November, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced he plans to implement 25 percent tariffs on all goods coming into the country from Canada and Mexico when he takes office in January.

Amid this uncertainty, Commerce Express Inc. strongly advises cross-border shippers to plan ahead and discuss the potential of increased tariffs with trusted transportation providers. If company orders from either Canada or Mexico can be brought in before the incoming administration, it can be a straightforward way for shippers to avoid potential tariffs.

However, it is equally important not to panic. Shippers should not compromise the timing of their supply chains to frantically rush orders in. While frontloading cargo is a viable strategy if there is enough flexibility in one’s supply chain, it can also create problems of its own. A surplus of cargo could mean additional storage and warehouse fees.

Diesel Update: The average price of diesel decreased 8.2 cents a gallon, putting the average price of diesel at $3.458 a gallon, according to the U.S. EIA.

Cross Border Updates: Canada’s trade with the U.S., saw slight increase in the month of October. Export volumes were up 0.4%, while imports saw a 0.3% increase – according to Transport Topics.

Additionally, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will adjust hours of operation for 38 U.S. – Canada border ports of entry starting on January 6th. Reason for this? CBP announcement said this will allocate the agencies resources efficiently for vital national and border security tasks.

Truck Parking: The state of Connecticut has put forth $31 million to invest in truck parking throughout the state. Per the CTDOT, five key locations will see this funding go towards more truck parking spaces. Currently the state has around 420 truck parking spaces at various rest areas and plazas, this funding will help increase that capacity to 600 total spaces – a 44% boost – per CTDOT.

Holiday Season: Over 800 truckers will carry wreaths, for Wreaths Across America, to more than 4,900 locations across the U.S. and its territories. Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember the fallen and honor those who service. Volunteers place wreaths on the graves of veterans’. It is held on Saturday, December 14th.
