New year, new UPS surcharges! Starting January 16th, UPS will start surcharges of 30 cents per package on all domestic ground residential deliveries, as well as on parcels moving via its SurePost program with the U.S. Postal Service, according to Freightwaves. The UPS SurePost program combines UPS ground trucks and hubs with local delivery infrastructure of the United States Postal Service (USPS for last-mile logistics).
This new surcharge comes three weeks after the company’s 2022 rate increases will take effect, as well as one day after its fees on peak-season deliveries fall away. The SurePost and ground residential surcharges will be based on the weekly shipping activity AFTER February 2020, which was the last normal delivery period before the pandemic began.
In addition, shipments that require ‘additional handling’ (i.e., due to their size and weight they must be manually handled as UPS’ conveyor system is not able to process them), will be imposed a $3.50-per-piece surcharge and for any package larger than 96 inches or 130 inches in length and girth, will be imposed a $40-per-package surcharge, according to Freightwaves.
Customers could be in for a slight shock, if their 2022 shipping budgets did not include or anticipate these costs on January 16th. However, a UPS spokesman said, because of the strong demand for their services, it is continuing to monitor the costs for their customers.
